What did we do?

MarsBased partnered with Everesting to design and build the Everesting Challenges Platform, a React Native + Expo mobile app for iOS and Android that expands the brand beyond its single iconic challenge into a year-round home for that community. It's a mobile application that turns everyday training data into a long-term climbing identity.

The app sits on top of behaviour athletes already have. It connects to a user's Strava account, automatically ingests their activity and elevation data, and reinterprets that elevation into Everesting-specific progression, ranking, and achievement.

Around that core, the platform brings together everything a climber needs in one place:

  • Home: A discovery experience for challenges, organised into thematic carousels and curated from a back office.

  • Ranking: A rolling 12-month global leaderboard, filterable by country and age group.

  • Club: A content hub for articles, news, and announcements from the brand.

  • Account: User settings, Strava connection, and membership management.

The experience is supported by a membership programme with free and paid tiers, with payments processed through Apple Pay and Google Pay, and by automated email and push notification flows powered by Klaviyo. A back office gives the Everesting team direct control over challenges and content, without depending on the development team for day-to-day updates.

The result is a platform that gives athletes a reason to keep engaging all year round, and a foundation for Everesting to build a lasting relationship with its community.

Tech stack

The technologies we used in this project.

React Native & Expo (SDK 54)

A single TypeScript codebase delivering a native experience across both iOS and Android.

NativeWind, GlueStack UI, TanStack Query & Zustand

Tailwind-style styling and reusable UI primitives for a consistent, responsive interface.

Strava, Stripe, Klaviyo & RevenueCat

Integrations that power activity ingestion, membership payments, and automated lifecycle messaging.

Impact

The Everesting Challenges Platform reframes what the brand can be: not a one-off feat, but a year-round product that lives alongside an athlete's training.

By reinterpreting Strava data into Everesting-specific progression, the app turns elevation an athlete is already gaining into a meaningful, long-term climbing identity. The rolling global ranking and structured challenge system give climbers a reason to return regularly, while the membership programme establishes a clear, recurring revenue model for the brand. The back office and Klaviyo automation mean Everesting can launch new challenges, publish content, and nurture members without engineering support.

Challenges

One of the central challenges was making sense of Strava data: ingesting an athlete's activity and elevation history and reinterpreting it into Everesting's own progression and ranking logic, reliably and at scale.

We also built the app on a backend-agnostic, feature-based architecture. Each part of the product, from authentication to challenges, rankings, and profiles, is self-contained, which lets a real backend be connected feature by feature without rewriting the interface. This kept the product moving quickly while protecting it against costly rework later.

Finally, delivering a polished, native experience across both iOS and Android from a single codebase required careful attention to performance, navigation, and consistency, so the app feels fast and cohesive on every device.

Key wins

Strava-powered automation

Activity and elevation data flow in automatically, so progression updates without manual input.

A lasting climbing identity

The Everesting Score turns cumulative elevation into a long-term career, visualised as a mountain journey.

Global ranking

A rolling 12-month leaderboard with country and age filters keeps competition fresh and personal.

Membership built in

Free and paid tiers with Stripe payments establish a recurring revenue model from day one.

Backend-agnostic architecture

A clean, modular foundation that lets real backend services be integrated feature by feature.

Self-serve content

A back office and Klaviyo flows let the Everesting team manage challenges, content, and messaging on their own.
