Standardising innovation: Our internal guide to AI-augmented development

At MarsBased, we have always believed that excellence is the result of well-defined processes. As AI coding agents, such as Claude and GitHub Copilot, transition from experimental tools to core components of the development lifecycle, we felt it was time to move beyond ad-hoc usage. We are excited to announce the latest addition to our public Handbook: a dedicated guide to AI-augmented development.
Our goal with this new documentation is to ensure that every Martian on the team approaches AI with the same rigour and intentionality we apply to manual coding. Rather than simply reacting to AI outputs, we have formalised a methodology centered on a research, plan, and implement framework. This ensures that we remain the architects of our solutions, using AI to execute well-thought-out strategies rather than letting the tool dictate the direction of the codebase.
The guide dives deep into the technical foundations of our workflow, explaining how we use CLAUDE.md files and specific project rules to keep AI agents aligned with our high standards. We also cover the nuances of context management and the use of subagents and hooks, which allow us to automate the more repetitive parts of engineering while maintaining full control over the final output. By standardising these "rules of engagement," we provide our clients with the speed of AI combined with the reliability of expert human oversight.
This new section of our Handbook is designed to be a living document. Our team regularly updates these practices, contributing new tips and refining our workflow as the technology evolves. While these contributions happen internally to ensure our methods remain battle-tested, we keep the Handbook public to share our journey with the broader community and demonstrate our commitment to transparency in how we build modern software.
